Trips around Australia are becoming more and more common, but none will ever rival the figure-of-eight crossing - surely the most gruelling test a new brand of oil ever underwent - made by four men and two sedan cars, one a Mini and the other an Austin 1800. Encouraged and constantly entertained - by the famous 'Gelignite Jack', the inimitable and irrepressible Jack Murray - they completed the journey from east to west and back again in a remarkably short time. It was as much an endurance test as an oil test, but both 'Castrol' and men were more than equal to the task.

7. Unsafe At Any Speed
Ralph Nader (consumer advocate)
You probably have heard of Ralph Nader - the USA consumers advocate. He wrote this book during the late 1960's and it was a 'damning' report on the then current US car production. In it he states that the Morris 1800 (Landcrab) built in the UK, was the safest car of the time with its suspension, brakes, and body construction. He stressed the fact that, if the 1800 was involved in a head on collision, the whole power unit goes under the car and not into the occupants.

It is quite a good book for any Austin/BMC fan and gives far better wrap of the 1800 than Graham Robson does in The Cars of BMC. (Paul Copeland)
